It is a box to put your cooking supplies in for the chuck wagon. Charles Goodnight was the inspiration for the character Captain Woodrow Call form the book LONESOME DOVE by Larry McMurtry although Larry himself has never come right out and said so to my knowledge. But he is and everyone knows it.
